crc-rehab-blog:Barn Owl Re-nesting This ordeal started out as a sad story but it concluded with a happy ending.Last Wednesday, we admitted two baby barn owls. They were found in a deer stand in Lexington with their 4 siblings. Three were killed by the person that discovered them and one died in transport to us. It’s terrible and unfortunate, but not uncommon. Yesterday we received a call from someone with a baby barn owl on the ground in their silo. It had fallen out of the hayloft where it was nesting. When we went to the location to return the baby to the hayloft, we saw a great opportunity. It was a rural habitat, had ample food and shelter, AND a parent was there. Better yet, there was only one baby [barn owls can handle feeding large clutches (they typically lay 4-7 eggs)], so there was room for additions! Two, in fact. So the lone barn owl nestling in Mount Ulla got two siblings last night. Many thanks to the homeowner for allowing us to do this - and the barn owl parents for taking on a couple of extra mouths to feed. -- source link
