thatsthat24: kateoplis: “I just wanted to live.” The 70th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation isn’t the time to mark just another historical event, but to remember humanity at its worst. I’ll never forget my visit to this place. The silence truly was deafening. I argue that this wasn’t humanity at it’s absolute worse. The Holocaust is fucking horrifying. And the horrifying thing is that it was done in the “modern” age by “civilized” people. The fact is that modern and civilized people condoned holocausts around the world and we have yet to seriously acknowledge or even discuss it. Movies are made about the Holocaust and win Oscars and here we are remembering the anniversary but I have yet to see the Khmer Rouge get the same treatment or South Sudan and North Korea as we stand around and watch and even send them aid money. Where is the Oscar winner about all the South American dictatorships we propped up? We make movies and build museums about the tragedies where we were able to play the heroes but we forget about the catastrophes that we either ignored, allowed or played a part in. -- source link
