global-fashions: Photographer Chen Man - HARPER’S BAZAAR CHINA AUGUST 2015 My 2nd POC - Behind the Scenes post is one of China’s most prolific and notable photographers Chen Man. Born in Beijing in 1980 Chen was encouraged, by her mother, to pursue the arts at the age of 2 and went on to attend the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied graphic design. While still a student there she had her first photos published as covers/editorials for China’s Vision Magazine at the age of 23. Chen’s work often references traditional Chinese culture, while helping to evolve China’s beauty aesthetic. She’s shot covers for China’s Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, Hong Kong’s Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Muse, and i-D. She has contributed to exhibitions in Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, London and Hong Kong, as well as her native Beijing. Commercially her clients include Adidas, Motorola and Gucci; the photographer also collaborated with MAC cosmetics in 2012 to create a line of pink and blue products, representing love and water. Chen is known for her skill at digital post production. “My task is to acquire, integrate and communicate information. [My style] is both Eastern and Western, both mainstream and non-mainstream, extending from the past, the present to the future, with vulgarity and elegance. It’s about creating a modern visual language that everyone can understand. “Photographers accuse my photos of being too much like painted work, while artists shut me out because my work appears in fashion magazines. It was only when the Beijing Today Art Museum and Shanghai Contemporary Art Museum invited me to exhibit my work, people started to learn about the ‘artist’ part of me.” - Chen Man Sources: BofF, Wiki -- source link
