Madison Square Garden, New York City, June, 1921.Infamous boxing promoter Tex Rickard created the “World’s Largest Indoor Pool” inside Madison Square Garden’s amphitheater. The pool had a capacity of 4,000 swimmers and featured a 25 foot waterfall at one end. Rickard had signed a 10 year lease on the Garden the year before, and planned to open the pool every summer to events and the general public. However, the following February, Rickard was accused of molesting 4 underage girls. Though eventually acquitted, the scandal forced Rickard to lose the lease, and most likely contributed to New York Life, the buildings owner, to tear down the Garden in 1925, and put up an office building. one of the City’s great architectural loses. -- source link
