On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote. The amendment, which was formally introduced over 40 years prior in 1878, was nicknamed the “Anthony Amendment,” in reference to activist Susan B. Anthony.Indeed, this victory was the product of the hard work of countless suffragettes, including other leaders such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ida B. Wells, and Alice Paul. Paul, as founder of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage, began a newspaper, The Suffragist, in 1913, which ran until the amendment was ratified. The issue popped up in mainstream news coverage as well, as seen in this 1915 cartoon from Harper’s Weekly.(images from The Suffragist (November 17, 1917 and December 15, 1917) and Harper’s Weekly (October 9, 1915)) -- source link
