romegreeceart:House of Cadmus - the death of king PentheusIn Euripides’ play the Baccantes Dionysos was mightily pissed off with a fact that his mortal relatives didn’t acknowledge his status as a god. So he wandered back to his mother’s home town Thebes to settle the issue. There were plenty of scheming and plotting but eventually it all ended badly for the royal house of Cadmus. The young ruling king and Dionysos’ cousin Pentheus was torn apart by his mother and aunts. Consequently these women were exiled from realm of Thebes and Dionysos also proclaimed that abdicated royal couple Cadmus and Harmonia will be turned into snakes.A Roman fresco depicting Pentheus’ death (Casa of Vettii, Pompeii) -- source link
