The attack on Pearl Harbor was remembered with items that celebrated the valor of individual sailors. Messman Third Class Doris “Dorie” Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism aboard the USS WEST VIRGINIA on December 7, 1941. He was the first African American to receive that honor. This commemorative piece includes text from his award citation. Miller later served aboard the USS LISCOME BAY. He died in November 1943 when the ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine.
