Hehe guess where I am now ^^I’m actually not in Brightling, but the valley that houses the weird old house from which I now blog is a bit off to the left of there. If you climb the side of the valley opposite you can see the Obelisk peeking out between the trees (not the Hermit’s Tower, that’s a different tower-shaped landmark). Some gambling noble built it in the early Victorian era when he made a bet that you could see the spire of the local church from the side of the valley. He found out that he couldn’t so, to save face (and money), he built a spire-shaped tower in one day and one night to trick his opponent. Sounds far-fetched, but there it is, in perfect view of the old carriageway and a reasonable copy of the spire.Victorians were so weird, wow.The area also boasts two separate Forge Woods, about a mile from each other (maybe they used to be connected? Whatever, it’s really confusing for travellers such as myself) and Icehouse Wood, Hook’s Wood, Callice Wood and Little Prinkle Wood, all of which probably have strange and fascinating stories behind their names (must find out!). There’s also a brewery-cum-observatory a little way out of Brightling. Rural England, everybody. It’s great.Anyway, I’m staying in Pugshole (‘pug’ is actually an old word for badger, apparently), which is this big old house that used to be a barn with the family living above, so the lower floors’ heating is literally nonexistent and the only source of heat is a big fire of old trees from the grounds (mostly old apple trees :( The apples here are really nice but the trees are so old that some of them only grow 10-15 a year). We’d light a fire in the nursery but there’ve been birds nesting up the chimney for almost 8 years now so nope. Three layers of skirts it is.I woke up really late but not too late to join an apple-and-blackberry-picking excursion! It’s a bit late for blackberries, though, especially if you’re superstitious.
