01sentencereviews:An Elephant Sitting Still (2018), Hu BoContagious sadness, misfortune, complicity, cruelty— after nearly four hours, we never do get to see that elephant sitting still, but the film fully embodies that elephant’s supposed isolation; an icy, difficult, possibly unavoidable loneliness that can potentially only be defeated with acceptance, a recognition that one’s satisfaction does exist, though only and always in some other place, somewhere else, perhaps only a few cities away… ignoring the “reality” that in that same city just a few cities away, happiness there too resides only somewhere else, somewhere legendary, most likely somewhere in our own heads, meaning that the best we can do, maybe “the” (or at least “a”) solution, is to simply endure, hopefully with someone (anyone) else on their own similar search for the smallest of understanding, or, at the very least, peace– it’s a hell of a lot of a movie, an extremely difficult one for sure, but one that simultaneously knows that sometimes… the best we can do is laugh.
