JLPT Level: Unlisted, but the kanji are N5 and N2 respectively.This is not a very common expression. I think I’ve only ever seen it once in a manga. The most common way to say “small appetite” is 食欲が少ない (shokuyoku ga sukunai). This expression is pretty interesting because the direct translation is “to have a thin appetite.”I really hunted for the etymology behind this expression, but I couldn’t find anything. “Hosoi” can also be the word to describe a person who is “thin,” and I wonder if that has anything to do with this expression?
