Time passes, but New Yorkers always like to get outside and socialize on warm summer nights. American artist William Anderson Coffin captured this moment on Manhattan’s Eighth Avenue near Forty-second Street around 1900. The women and men strolling the sidewalk may be headed to the neighborhood’s nearby tea shops and theaters, or to open-air roof gardens where they can enjoy a drink while watching live variety shows. Coffin painted this scene entirely in shades of gray, perhaps creating it for a black-and-white magazine illustration.Posted by Jessica MurphyWilliam Anderson Coffin (American, 1855-1925).
