earthstory:Arctic Sea Ice Reaches 2nd Lowest Extent4 years ago in 2012, a series of heat waves caused Arctic Sea Ice to dramatically decline, reaching the lowest extent in recorded history. Satellite data has shown that the extent of sea ice was 1.32 m sq miles (4.10m sq km) compared with a previous low of 1.61m sq miles (4.17m sq km) on 18 September 2007.As of right now, 2016 has taken up the position of second lowest all time ice extent, surpassing 2007, with typically a couple weeks before the minimum extent is reached. Current trends don’t suggest that 2016 will break the all time mark, but it is instead consistent with a gradual downward spiral punctuated by extreme events.-LLLinks- http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19393075http://www.reading.ac.uk/news-and-events/releases/PR457684.aspxhttp://nsidc.org/Picture From nsidc.org -- source link
