Athos Aqueduct (Tri-X) by Harald Philipp More fascinating architecture at one of the 20 Orthodox monasteries of Athos, Greece. The architecture looks Georgian, and indeed, this particular monastery has Georgian origins. There are quite a number of Orthodox nationalities represented in Athos, not just Greek. The foundations of Christianity in this area date from the 4th century. Construction of monasteries took off in the 9th century. Since then, Serbian, Russian, Georgian, Ukrainian, Albanian, and Bulgarian monks (among others) have called this region home. The Athos region also enjoys quasi-independent status within Greece and the European Union. It even requires a special visa for entry (by boat only) and as a religious state within a state, is exempt from equality laws; as a result, it only allows males to enter the territory; that includes most domesticated animals too! (Cats are the exception). Even Greek value-added taxes (VAT) cannot be levied here. Nikon FM3a, Nikkor 20-35mm 2.8 AF-D Kodak Tri-X 400 XTOL 1+0, 7 mins @ 20C https://flic.kr/p/2hRxQxb -- source link
