Fortified Building, Nara, Kansai, Japan, 1980.I have no idea what this building was used for - a prison? a treasury? a fortress?I have been lucky to visit a great many countries in my lifetime, and of those Japan is the most mysterious to me. While I think I understand at least a little about the culture of most countries I have visited, I admit to understanding almost nothing about Japan. Even though I can read some Kanji (Chinese characters applied as Japanese words), almost none of the traditional culture of what can be a beautiful, annoying, intriguing and altogether mystifying country makes sense to me.
