Still thinking about rabbit divorce. Story/context under the cut:When Hyden was in his 30s, he was briefly engaged to a woman name Milana. They met at a fancy party that they both hated and bonded over being smug, spoiled aristocrats who thought they were the smartest people in the room and liked to talk shit. Milana was recently single again after her arranged marriage husband-to-be passed away from tuberculosis, and was enduring significant pressure from her parents to settle down with a rich man, so she was like “hey how about this guy who’s known to be a Problem” and her parents were like “oh god no please not that one”.She fully expected it to be a short-term, just-for-fun fling to piss off her parents–Hyden had a reputation for being an arrogant, shady, ill-tempered womanizer, after all–but it just so happened that their relationship coincided with Hyden making an earnest attempt to normie up and behave himself better. They got on surprisingly well. He enjoyed her mischievous streak and fondness for gossip and drama, and she appreciated his intelligence and cunning, and together they could make any boring party fun (for them and them only) by getting completely plastered and spending the evening one-upping each other with whispered insults about the food, music, and other guests.Unfortunately, it turns out that a relationship built solely on hating other people together isn’t very solid. It eventually became clear to Milana that, while Hyden would laugh at her jokes, he did not actually have any real interest in her feelings or thoughts outside of that. Not only that, but he did not see her as anywhere close to an intellectual equal–unlike him, she was not a wizard, and therefore could not ever truly engage with him over his one true interest, magic. He was also being very secretive about some sort of mysterious health condition that he would not share with her, and got the angriest he’d ever been with her when she tried to get an answer from him about it.Their relationship was already on the rocks when their kingdom went to war and Hyden was drafted into combat. Some months later, when he returned home as a newly minted (but pardoned by the king) war criminal with newly minted nerve damage, he expected her to be impressed and sympathetic and rush over to comfort and take care of him. Instead, she was horrified at what he’d done. They had a vicious argument where Hyden said awful things to her and she called him a monster. They broke up not long after. With his attempt at normalcy failed, the closest relationship he’d ever had over, ever-worsening health, and a blank check from the king to basically do whatever he wanted, the stage was now set for Hyden to go off the rails completely. -- source link
