Brussels Cathedral by Yuri Rapoport St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral, Brussels. The history of Brussels starts in 580 when Saint Gaugericus founded a chapel on an island in the Senne River near what would later become Brussels. However, it was only four hundred years later when Duke Charles of Lower Lorraine built the first permanent fortification on the same island. Charles’ daughter, Gerberga, became the wife of Lambert I of Leuven around 1000 and gained the County of Brussels. Since then, Brussels was part of different domains, including Duchy of Brabant, Burgundian, Spanish and Austrian Netherlands, and France, until it became the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium in 1830. The city enjoys a location at the crossroads of important trade routes between Bruges, Ghent and Cologne and thrived as a commercial center majoring in textiles and tapestries. Over time, Brussels turned into a financial center and, in the 20th century, became the de facto capital of the European Union. Diverse architectural and cultural heritage, along with waffles, French fries and comics make Brussels an important tourist destination [March 4, 2017]. https://flic.kr/p/2gZx1rR -- source link
