“Beware the habu!” The habu is Ryukyu’s notorious venomous snake. Apparently they’re all waking up from their winter slumbers around now, so we were told to avoid walking around at night near the house at which we were staying (which was sort of out of the way of any city). Habu are also used to make habu-shu, or habu alcohol, which is basically awamori (an Okinawan alcoholic drink) with a habu in it. The snake is either drowned in the awamori and then preserved there for ages, or the snake is gutted and then preserved. Gross. That said, I really wanted to try it but never got the chance.
