Starting this Friday, visitors to the Brooklyn Museum will not only be able to stroll through the history of sneaker culture, they will also have the opportunity to experience the work of FAILE, a collaboration between Brooklyn-based artists Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller. Working together since 1999, they have produced everything from paintings, sculptures, and multimedia installations to outdoor projects featuring wheat-pasted prints and large-scale murals. Their work questions our relationships to consumer culture, religious traditions, and the urban environment by blurring the boundaries between fine art, street art, and popular culture. For the centerpieces of their Brooklyn Museum exhibition, FAILE has united two major projects initiated in 2010—The FAILE & BÄST Deluxx Fluxx Arcade and Temple, and paired them with new sculptures and paintings. These works epitomize the artists’ ongoing practice of mixing and re-mixing found imagery to create a unique visual iconography. FAILE draws on a wide range of sources, both as homage and as subversions of common stereotypes. You’ll see imagery borrowed from a wide range of traditions—everything from American quilts, folk art, Native American design, Renaissance sculpture, Tibetan art, and religious architecture, to pulp magazines, comic books, sci-fi movie posters, adult entertainment advertisements, storefront typography, and especially elements of their Brooklyn surroundings.Whether experiencing their Temple evoking religious architecture with a playful reimagining of spirituality in the age of globalization, or playing the games in their Deluxx Fluxx Arcade, created in collaboration with the Brooklyn artist known as BÄST, you’ll witness their skilled interweaving of the sacred and profane, past and present, high and low, along with the many other contradictions inherent in our daily lives, and by extension in the art of FAILE.Posted by Sharon Matt Atkins -- source link
