Courtyard, National Museum of American Art/National Portrait Gallery, old Patent Office Building, Washington, DC, 1972.If asked to name my favorite government building in DC, this would tie with the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. In a magnificent example of adaptive re-use, the halls where once patent models were displayed are now used to display art, and they work very well for the purpose. A few blocks way from the National Mall, the adjoining museums, where one begins and the other ends is often unclear, are rarely crowded. The Courtyard has subsequently been covered with a dramatic glass roof and is now an all season environment with benches to sit and enjoy an espresso. A perfect pre-COVID-19 place to spend a hot August afternoon! -- source link
