Bloomers were developed in the 19th century in America in response to the adverse effects women’s fashion had on its wearers. Restricted movement in heavy skirts and whale-bone-fitted corsets were placed on the wayside to make way for a new type of dress, inspired by the Turkish fashion of pantaloons. Also referred to as freedom dresses, bloomers became a symbol of women’s rights in the early 1850’s and unsurprisingly was met with criticism. *A Bloomer’s Complaint* is a response to those negative views: I wonder how often these men must be told When a woman a notion once seizes,However they ridicule, lecture or scold, She’ll do, after all, as she pleasesThey know very well that their own fashions change With each little change of the season,But Oh! It is ‘monstrous’ and ‘dreadful’ and ‘strange’ And ‘out of all manner of reason,’If we take a fancy to alter our dress, And come out in style ‘à la Bloomer,’To hear what an outcry they make, I confess Is putting me quite out of humor This piece is from the Edward Keefer Collection of Sheet Music.Call number: Folio M1.A13 K4, Box 40, no. 2http://ow.ly/DQaa30khi8a* * *#kislakcenter #sheetmusic #pennlibraries #womensfashion #bloomers #19thcenturyfashion #Turkishdress #womenslib #lyrics #herstory #librariesofinstagram #specialcollections -- source link
