She’d done grade eight at school and really wanted to get her diploma even though piano lessons didn’t quite fit into university life. The dress code was a bit weird but her new piano teacher explained that as most of his pupils came straight from school it seemed best to maintain a certain scholarly look, and by wearing something like school uniform she would be reminded that she was here to learn. Then he started to explain that a short skirt would also make it easier for him to deal with her when she failed to put in the time and effort to get her pieces right. She instinctively brought her knees together and placed her hands protectively on her thighs. She did really want to get that diploma, but that leather strap in his hands was certainly not something she had ever imagined seeing. He explained that it had only one purpose. She could see that. And the really strange thing was that it didn’t put her off the idea of coming to him twice a week for lessons. In fact she was quite certain that she was going to get that diploma, and maybe move on towards the fellowship one afterwards.
