I’m a slow moving pirate. That’s why I use a turtle. #screwyourparrot . Unrelated to turtle: I woke up this morning thinking about how Hillary Clinton’s illness surprised me. I guess I forgot that she was a human, shaking thousands of hands. I got to thinking about how we dehumanize famous people. Or make them somehow different than us. When I was a kid watching the Golden Globes, I remember one of the guests said ‘I just ran into Brad Pitt at the urinal! He was standing next to me…peeing!’ and I thought 'whoa… Brad Pitt goes to the bathroom?’ . Why would that be a surprise? No one has ever told me that the rich and famous don’t use the bathroom. I came up with that on my own. Why? . It must have something to do with our national delusion that money and fame remove the embarrassments of being human. They must solve our basic problems. And my subconscious just ran with it. . Barrack Obama gets toe cramps and dribbles a little extra after he pees. George Clooney has gone to the toilet and realized, too late, that there’s no toilet paper. Meryl Streep has taken off her shoes on the couch and realized her feet smell like death, and that her friends must smell it too. I guarantee it. . When I was little I wanted to write a fan letter to a Disney Animator who had worked on Aladdin. His name was Eric Goldberg. My hero. My mom said 'I’ll find his address.’ I protested 'mom, I can’t just write him. He’s famous!’ She said, 'Jed, everyone is a human being. Everyone. No more and no less. And they all love to be encouraged.’ . I wrote him a letter and my mom sat on the phone like a private eye tracking down his address. . He wrote back. And drew me an original drawing of the Genie that said 'yo Jed, I ain’t never had a friend like you.’ I was ten years old. . From that moment, I’ve always believed I could talk to anyone. . People are people. No more, no less. And they all love to be encouraged. . (And no matter who you are, you want a turtle as a parrot) -- source link
