This is Lewis Powell. He was arrested in 1865 for conspiring to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. His arms are shackled. He was executed by hanging. This photo was colored by @marinaarts (her website is amazing). . I can’t help but look at him and think of the excuses we make for beauty. This man was a racist and a murderer. But his beauty causes me to say ‘what a shame.’ I remember seeing a beautiful woman who was homeless… her eyes were stunning… and I thought 'not you!?’ This is all embarrassing to write, but this photo brought up these thoughts in me. Why do we want ugly villains and handsome heroes? Are we so simple? . I read a statistic that beautiful people get significantly better tips than average looking people. . And if beauty has left you in pain too many times, you respond with venom. If your parents wanted wealth and never got it, even if they never said it outright, you think the rich are better. If a rich person fired your dad, you hate the rich. If a friend has left you behind for the popular kids, you detest fame. . We think we make choices and have opinions. Of course we do. But behind that, I think we are balls bouncing down a hill, hitting one wall and jumping across the street to the next. . As Lewis Powell was executed, I know some deep part of me would have said 'what a shame. What went wrong?’ -- source link
