Hokusai, Katsushika. The Great Wave off Kanagawa. 1829-1832. Color woodcut. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. A true icon of art. It is very famous but I had no idea who did it or what it was titled or anything about it. Now, it is synonymous with Japan or Japanese culture. It’s a fairly simple art piece but it still conveys so much of their culture when you see it, you know it is quintessentially Japanese. I want to be able to capture an essence like that in my art. -- source link
