The Saw Handle Pistol,Made during the age of dueling, the saw handle pistol was a rather odd form of pistol popular in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. What distinguishes it most from other flintlock and percussionlock pistols was the very steep curve of the but giving it a “saw handle” shape. The purpose of this was to give the pistol greater stability and accuracy for aimed fire. Originally saw handle pistols were used specifically for dueling. However the were not that popular for that purpose, as traditionalists preferred to duel with more traditional looking pistols. After the end of dueling saw handle pistols became especially popular with target shooters because of its greater accuracy. -- source link
