kidcrimefighter:with two flashback episodes by two different storyboard teams i think it’s pretty much official that amethyst and pearl do both look younger compared to the present, and it’s not just art differences or seeing them compared to rose quartz. i’m not sure their heights are that different (amethyst is a little smaller in the past) but really it’s more about their proportions and body language. a few people have already pointed out that this could be for the same reason that steven rapidly ages and de-ages in “too many birthdays” - the age gems appear to be is determined only by their mental state.when steven started rapidly aging, it was because of insecurity over how mature he was supposed to be in relation to the human concept of age. obviously that doesn’t matter to gems, so instead i think their physical maturity is based more on their roles in relation to each other. rose, the leader who guides and inspires the others, is recognizably an adult, if a relatively young adult. pearl seems to be a teenager or college aged at the latest, fitting with how at this point in her life she’s largely defined by her intense love and devotion to rose, and the insecurity she has over it. amethyst, the “youngest” in relation to the other gems, the newest addition and also the least “civilized,” having spent her formative years alone and feral, takes the form of a child. garnet is about the same as in the present, though her role in the flashback feels more like an older sister figure to pearl and amethyst, but that’s compatible with how she looks, and also being a fusion might skew things anyway.the combination of being without rose and taking care of steven causes amethyst and pearl to redefine their roles in the group. amethyst is more of an older sister/guardian than the baby of the group now, and pearl as a caretaker rather than a lover becomes more like a young mother. their personalities are the same at their core, but their body language and behavior change to reflect their new roles and bodies - i’m not sure if that’s by choice or as a result of their ‘brain shape’ literally altering, like how steven acted differently as his age changed. it’s really interesting to think about how this malleable age thing might work in general gem social relations! -- source link
