penny-anna:thoughts? I’m inconsistent. I think the top right is the ideal but the further you get away from that ideal, the less likely it is to be fanfiction. Fanworks in general are a lot closer than work with derivative elements, and explicitly transformative works for pay are more likely to approximate fanfiction when someone is taking a dump on fanworks on generally snobby principle. I think vids are properly fanworks but I’m not sure I’d count them as “fiction” if they don’t tell a story. Also, while cosplay in and of itself is almost certainly not fiction, is the story about a small child cosplaying as Jyn Erso who handed the Death Star plans to every Princess Leia she found at a particular con within the border or not?A similar question I’d be interested in addressing about fanwork is whether it’s a proper fanwork if it’s compensated financially. Is Wide Sargasso Sea questionably fannish because it was sold? What about fic or art created on commission? Money may be a third dimension to this alignment chart. -- source link
