“It is revolutionary for any trans person to choose to be seen and visible in a world that tells us we should not exist…[And] many in the trans community are fed up with LGBT organizations that continue to erase trans identity or just give lip service to trans issues. We need our cisgender allies—gay and straight—to treat transgender lives as if they matter, and trans people need multiple seats at the tables in the organizations that say they’re interested in LGBT equality; this absence has been painful since Stonewall.” – Laverne Cox (@lavernecox).March 31 is International Transgender Day of Visibility, an annual holiday dedicated to celebrating our siblings in the trans and gender non-conforming communities and raising awareness of the unique issues—and discrimination—faced by members of those communities. TDOV, as the day commonly is known, was established by trans activist Rachel Crandall in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of any holiday acknowledging and celebrating living members of the trans and GNC communities; Crandall cited the frustration that the only well-known trans-focused holiday was Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourns the murders of trans people..@lgbt_history is eternally grateful for the ongoing contributions of our family in the trans and GNC communities—from Marsha P.
