Today, April 5, 2016, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed into law one of the most sweeping “religious freedom” bills introduced in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision guaranteeing same-sex couples the legal right to marry. Under the Mississippi law, religious organizations are able to deny LGBTs marriage, adoption and foster care services; fire or refuse to employ them; and decline to rent or sell them property. Medical professionals are permitted to refuse to treat, counsel, and provide surgery related to “sex reassignment or gender identity transitioning.” And those with “deeply held religious beliefs” who provide wedding services, including DJs, photographers, dressmakers, florists, limousine drivers, and venue owners, may deny those services based on their beliefs. These are only a few examples. Similar bills are being considered in a number of other states. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #gay #bi #trans #lesbian #pride #gayvotesmatter #bivotesmatter #lesbianvotesmatter #transvotesmatter #voteyourheart #nohateinanystate #equalprotectionunderthelaw #itshappeningagain #outoftheclosets #intothestreets (at New York City Hall) -- source link
