brooklynmuseum: Roy DeCarava was instrumental in the early years of Kamoinge’s development and acted as a major catalyst in giving direction to the group as its first director. He was most notable for his mastery of tonal and spatial elements in his black-and white photographs and his ability to capture the spirit and vulnerability of his subject matter. In Shade Cord and Window, DeCarva captures a shade cord in front of a window, an innocent image that renders an eerie resemblance to a noose, perhaps hinting at the constant threat of violence that was ever present in the Black community.
