At least in CA, books cannot be gifted to inmates in person. A family member could not come into our store, purchase a book, and bring it to their inmate. Instead, we had to go through a special ordering system where the book shipped directly from our distributor to the prison/jail to minimize the opportunities for contraband to be slipped in. Magazines were ineligible for shipping to inmates because of the staples. This is about exploiting an already marginalized group of people for profit.^^^^^ -- source link
