Today in Real History: Christopher Columbus as Sex Slaver(TW for rape and sexual slavery)Years ago I read an excerpt from Columbus’ journals where he talks about raping a captive woman who he had taken from an island. When I read the account, the stunning / seemingly obvious thought was “how have I never heard of this? How could something this notable not be noted about a man who gets discussed and celebrated yearly in the U.S.?" I have brought this story up to a number of people over time and not ONE has ever heard of it! Coverage of Columbus’ behavior has been included in history books, but the fact that it is nowhere in American mass consciousness is pretty astounding.Using history books including Howard Zinn’s ”A People’s History of the United States“ as reference, The Oatmeal has released a cartoon today myth-busting the legacy of Columbus and detailing the ugly reality. He also brings up as a counter-figure Bartolomé de las Casas, who started out like Columbus but ended up with the title "Defender of the Indians.”He recommends “Bartolomé Day” but I prefer “Indigenous People’s Day” - Happy Indigenous People’s Day!Read the full The Oatmeal Columbus Day Strip -- source link
