Excavationsin a 16th-centuryTara house (Omsk Oblast, Siberia).Tarawas founded in 1594 as a military base, or fortress town, forsecuring the Siberian frontier as the Russians expanded eastwards. This big izba (loghouse) burned down in the 16thor 17thcentury, and was left as it was.Nearthe stove was a korchaga(big clay pot), whichwas used for storing food. A turnip was stored inside this pot whenthe house caught fire, and it “baked” from the heat (seen below).Theturnip had been kept for several months since the autumn, so it waspart of the winter stores. The house, therefore, burned down inwinter or spring.Remains of the charred turnip. -- source link
