cavetocanvas:Birth of the Virgin From the Life of the Virgin Scenes - Pietro Cavallini, Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome, c. 1290Cavallini was pretty important - on par with Giotto in terms of moving away from a Byzantine model and more towards a naturalistic perspective. Even though this is a mosaic, there’s a painterly quality to it; the bands of color parallel the brushstrokes of a paintbrush, while older mosaics had a more impressionistic quality to them. In addition, the life cycle of Mary was starting to gain importance in the church; the focus on the Virgin Mary was part of an effort to humanize one’s spiritual relationship with god, so increasingly we see more depictions of Mary’s life in addition to the standard nativity scene.(Edit: Fun fact: I wrote a huge essay about this today on my exam where I basically expanded on what I wrote in the post. Cave to canvas as a study tool: it works!) -- source link
