Lewis Hine captures a scene in American Military Hospital No. 1 (Neuilly, France) on June 12th, 1918. An American soldier is having his wound dressing changed, revealing the stump of his right arm, amputated near the shoulder.Note the rubber gloves that “Dr. Johnson” is wearing, the newly-issued round dog tag the soldier is wearing around his wrist and the scars on the nurse’s face and hands showing that she has had Smallpox at some point in her life. (Higher resolution here.)The expression on the man’s face as he stoutly refuses to look at his amputation is moving. I sincerely hope he made a full recovery and was able to rejoin society. -- source link
