That’s the question Mesa Verde National Park officials are asking after the park was the recent target of vandals.“The purpose of the National Park Service is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations,” the official said.The cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Colorado’s southwest corner, are some of the most notable and best preserved on the North American continent.In recent weeks, stones have been painted for a scavenger hunt, cairns were piled to lure visitors away from the trails, letters and shapes were carved into prehistoric grinding slicks on the Petroglyph Point Trail, names were rubbed into sandstone using prehistoric charcoal dug up at a nearby archaeological site, and graffiti was found etched in sandstone on the Knife Edge Trail.Huginn’s Heathen Hof reports:Park Rangers are still searching for any information on who may have defaced the federally protected site.
