gffa:SO, STAR WARS DATING SYSTEMS: THERE HAVE BEEN A BUNCH OF THEM.The most famous of the SW dating systems is, of course, the BBY/ABY (Before the Battle of Yavin/After the Battle of Yavin) that sets A New Hope as the central point on the calendar, as a nod to ANH’s significance as the very first Star Wars movie. But I’m not sure how much it’s really even used in-universe? It tends to be more about out-of-universe date stamps. However, there have been some other ones that have popped up! After seeing this tweet from Matt Martin about how “the Visual Guides tend to use a dating system that’s specific to the era of the guide”, I went back through some guidebooks (in order of the above): - Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy’s Most Notorious- Rogue One Ultimate Visual Guide- Star Wars Rebels - The Visual Guide- Solo - A Star Wars Story - The Official Guide- The Rise of Skywalker Visual DictionaryEach one of them has a different dating system! There is also another dating system from Star Wars: The Rebel Files and they generally fall into two categories:- In-universe calendars (that the characters would use)- Out of universe calendars (that creators use to refer to events)And all of them tend to stick to just the one book they’ve appeared in. The dating systems used are:- C.R.C. Unknown what this stands for, but probably something like Centralized Republic Calendar or Common Republic Calendar?, potentially an in-universe calendar that the Republic would have used, appears only in Scum & Villainy, more info in this post- BR1/AR1 - Presumably Before/After Rogue One, an out-of-universe dating system used in Rogue One Ultimate Visual Guide- Lothal Calendar - LY (Lothal Year) presumably an in-universe calendar, used in Star Wars Rebels - The Visual Guide andStar Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know- BKR/AKR - Before Kessel Run/After Kessel Run, an out-of-universe dating system used in Solo - A Star Wars Story - The Official Guide- BSI/ASI - Before Starkiller Incident/After Starkiller Incident, an out-of-universe dating system used inThe Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary- BFE/AFE - Before the Formation of the Empire/After the Formation of the Empire, used in Star Wars: The Rebels Files, an in-universe “Imperial Calendar” (reference image)Each of these systems of date is generally limited to just the book it appears in and isn’t an attempt to replace BBY/ABY, but a reference point for that specific era, to better help you understand the immediacy of the events taking place around the most significant event of that particular movie.Setting the dating system around the Kessel Run in Solo isn’t saying that it’s the most important event, but instead letting you know how long ago the escape from Corellia was from the events of the movie, so it better informs your sense of time.Setting a dating system around the Starkiller Incident isn’t about replacing BBY/ABY, but about giving you a better sense of the relation of the events to the point in time the audience is familiar with in that era!Which is pretty helpful, to give you a sense of scope and time, but, don’t worry, BBY/ABY isn’t going anywhere. ♥ -- source link
