archaicwonder:Drachm from Istros, Moesia c. 400 BCAncient Istros (Histria) was a Greek colony on the Black Sea coast, established by Milesian settlers near the strategic Danube Delta. It became the first Greek town on the present day Romanian territory. Istros was the ancient Thracian name for the Danube, Europe’s second longest river. The coins show two male heads, one being inverted. On the reverse ΙΣΤΡΙΗ is written over an eagle grasping a dolphin in its talons; the letter A is below. The faces on this coin have been variously interpreted as the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux), representing many dualities such as the rising and setting sun, positive and negative, and tragedy and comedy. It may also signify a geographical significance of the Danube Delta where the two branches of the river Danube meet, and as the reverse shows, where the wind meets the sea. -- source link
