Niels Simonsen (Dec. 10, 1807 - 1885) was a Danish history painter who specialized in battle scenes. His best known work depicts the Danish retreat from Dannevirke during the war with Prussia in 1864. Simonsen trained at the Royal Academy, both as a sculptor and as a painter. He sold many paintings to various European royal houses, esp. his exotic paintings from the Middle East and North Africa.
