Jens Birkholm (Nov. 21, 1869 - 1915) was a Danish painter in the social-realist (muckraker) tradition, who spent much of his youth traveling through Europe to dodge military service. He particularly enjoyed Berlin, where he spent many years painting the poor and homeless in the city’s shelters. He also acquired TB there, which eventually became the death of him. From 1902 to his death he lived in Faaborg, Denmark, where he was among friends and colleagues - thee Funen Painters. Influenced by them, he became more of an Impressionist artist, focusing on landscape and portrait painting.Above: Bedtime at the Shelter, 1901 - oil on canvas (SMK) -- source link
