carazelaya:I do outreach on behalf of Openly Secular at my job, and I had this idea of creating an easy to read infograph so people could try and understand beyond the stereotypes of Atheists that they are used to. I’m really happy that through a lot of hard work from many people this first draft is being presented. I work trying to bolster secular identities, and it really is a struggle in the southeast region that I focus on. For every redditor firebrand atheist you are used to identifying as the face of atheism there are people like me who just want our identities to be harassment free. I tend not to talk about this stuff as much because I think the new atheist community can be kind of toxic and sometimes they are shortsighted when it comes to issues of privilege (in that many are straight white upper or middle class able-bodied educated men who have it in every other respect), but yeah. As an atheist, this is definitely actually still a thing. And it’s surprising sometimes when you’re in a normal conversation with someone and it comes up how quickly their attitude changes. -- source link
