Who’s Afraid of Red Yellow and Blue IIIA series paintings by Barnett Newman, Who’s Afraid of Red Yellow and Blue became a source of controversy because of it’s simplistic design with criticism of the “my kid could do that” ilk. In 1986 the third iteration of the painting was slashed with a knife by critic and painter Gerard Jan van Bladeren. The painting was restored but no longer remains on display as the restorations were not of the quality Newman desired. Honestly if I was Newman I would have requested the painting remain on display without restorations and call the results of van Bladeren’s vandalism a brilliant addition to the work and have him officially credited as a co-artist. -- source link
