peashooter85:Mauser Model 33/40,First created in Czechoslovakia, the Mauser Model 33/40 was a carbine based off of the Gew 98 rifle. Called the VZ-33 it had a shortened barrel and was much lighter than the Gewehr 98. When Germany occupied Czechoslovakia, they modified the VZ-33 into the Gew 33/40, a carbine that was shorter than the standard K98. Among their modifications was a switch from hardwood stocks to laminate, an addition of 5mm length due to use of a different buttplate, and a metal plate was attached to the left hand side of the buttstock. Around 150,000 were produced, mostly for use by mountain troops and paratroopers. A model was also created that had a fold up stock.Anyone have any idea what the sheet metal buttplate guard was for? I have heard many explanations, each of them sounding equally ridiculous. -- source link
