AUROCHS (Bos primigenius)“First-born ox/cow”Early Pleistocene-Late Holocene, 1.8 million-392 years ago This large, (partially) prehistoric ancestor of modern cattle went extinct very recently in geological time - the year 1627. It has been featured in everything from early human cave paintings to the novel series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin (alongside their Pleistocene contemporaries, direwolves). They are not, however, featured in the television adaptation, Game of Thrones, which tends to be book readers’ one and only criticism of the show. -- source link
