Gouache painting I did based on the murals of Chiik Nahb Structure sub 1-4 (SE-S1), Calakmul, the Classic period city ruled by the Serpent (Kaan) dynasty. Calakmul or Kaan waged a hundreds’ year war with their main rivals, Mutal (Tikal) during the Classic and Late Classic periods in the Maya culture heartland. This rivalry pulled countless Maya communities and cities and gave shape to the great culture in this period. This scene depicts a woman in a diaphanous blue huipil? holding an olla filled with atole, while a slave or servant holds the large container over her head. A man in the back drinks the atole as he observes the scene. The murals in the back of the illustration allude to the woman in blue’s profession and what goes on in those spaces. -- source link
