Hans Scharoun, “my favorite house” Haus Schminke, 1932-22. Löbau, Saxony, Germany. He is lllustrating the “new life ship” in the guest book – “it may serve you well.”Schminke, a factory owner, saw Scharoun’s style first at the exhibition “Weissenhofssiedlung” in Stuttgart and wished for “a modern house for two parents, four children and one or two occasional guests” – including a Frankfurt kitchen, easy to clean surfaces or built-in closets. After WWII it became a commandant’s office of the Red Army, later a meeting place of GDR organizations. Nowadays it is open to the public, you can even stay there overnight.
