slumberinggirl:corinbro:slumberinggirl:corinbro:slumberinggirl:corinbro:slumberinggirl:corinbro:nalintant:Here’s my view of the ‘I made it better (so it’ll fit my political pov)’The thing that’s going on.Okay but fair useYou can’t rip off someone’s work of art to “fix it” and call that fair use. Then why does deviantART exist? you know why does Fan Art in general exist? The fact is you can’t rip off other people’s work to fix it and then sell that work. Why would you pay bigots for their bigotry? Creating fanart isn’t the same thing as taking someone’s work and editing it to “fix it”If you don’t like what an artist is drawing, don’t give them any attention. What is and isn’t considered bigotry anymore is so fucking arbitrary that it’s insane. But again, if you don’t like what an artist is doing, don’t give them any sort of exposure! It’s that fucking easyYeah it actually is. Drawing a Steven universe headcannon or Harry Potter as a vampire is taking someone’s work and changing it to fix it. And it’s completely legal Let me rephrase, it’s one thing to take someone’s work to photoshop and “fix it” or trace over it so it’s more PC. It’s another thing to make fanart based on something you saw or that’s inspired by a work of art. Even in your specific example, if I wanted to trace a comic book character and then edit her to have glasses or have a different super power or anything I felt like to make her more pc, that would still be okay. In addition, like 100% of memes are created by doing just that, and they’re perfectly fine. No, that wouldn’t be okay, because you’re taking someone’s art and passing it off as your own. Memes are different because they’re created mostly anonymously, and people just copy the format, not necessarily the art. No one really knows who creates memes when they start circulating, and if the creator is known, they should be credited. It’s not okay to steal other people’s work, “fix it” and try to pass it off as your own. That’s hella illegal. Not only that, headcanons and fan art aren’t fixing anything. They’re inspired by something, expressing a totally different idea. I’m not an artist, I’m a writer, so say I write a good ol’ fanfic in an AU. I’m not fixing another author’s work. Harry Potter as a vampire isn’t “fixing” anything, it’s a different idea. Fan art is individual expression. Copying someone else’s work for your political views isn’t expression, it’s theft. -- source link
