dancingnurse-ed:NURSING: TOP 10 IDEAS OF HOW TO IMPROVE WORKPLACE RELATIONSHIPS January 26, 2013Respect for coworkers is not always emphasized in nursing school but it should be right up there with respecting our patients. 1.Say good morning. Seems obvious but many people storm in and bark out, “what’s my assignment” without greeting coworkers. Communicate. It is one of our most powerful tools. 2. Discuss the plan of care for that day with your nursing assistants. Never undervalue their importance. They feel the same way that we do when an arrogant doctor assumes we only handle bedpans and aren’t important. Quite often nurse’s aides are the first ones to spot a change in the patient and save more lives than they get credit for. Also helps to do walking rounds with them. Small task, large impact.3. Utilize all resources - case managers in particular are a wealth of knowledge and tend to know more about the patients’ discharge status before the residents or interns.4. Invite everyone to the unit shindigs, as in all who are part of the unit - including housekeeping, social workers, etc. (even though other units seem to sniff out a party from five floors away, like the ER - they just always know). Feeding others is such a simple thing to do and boosts morale. Not to mention makes people less grouchy.5. Be consistently on time. Even a 15 minute delay can throw the next shift, and may set the tone with others ” well, no one else is here, ” or “day shift is always late, why should we bother getting there on time?” 6. Check your charts before you leave - a lot of complaints about orders from 4 hours prior, that just weren’t picked up.7.Check your rooms, med cart, workstation - are they neat?8. If you notice an error from a previous nurse - give them the benefit of the doubt; approach them first before escalating to management.9. If you see another nurse having a rough shift - help where you can10. Avoid manipulating assignments, just so you don’t get all the admissions/ discharges/ difficult patients. Two reasons - 1st, you don’t know how your own district will change during the shift and secondly - karma can be a bitch.Remember….. Respect is infectious…..Respiratory Therapists, help out the nurses as much as you can. They deserve it, and sometime they might help you as well. -- source link
