We Want to Wish Everyone a Happy Father’s Day Today! We Hope You Have a Great Day. However, We Wanted to Take a Moment to Debunk the Harmful Myth of the Absent Black Father that Is so Often Used to Explain All the Socioeconomic Issues Plaguing Black Communities in America. Take a Moment to Celebrate Black Fathers Everywhere! 11 Images That Capture The True Beauty Of Black Fatherhood: http://huff.to/1IsNpIM via Zun Lee (Follow Him on Instagram at @ZunLeePhoto)“One of the most persistent statistical bludgeons of people who want to blame black people for any injustice or inequity they encounter is this: According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (C.D.C.), in 2013 in nearly 72 percent of births to non-Hispanic black women, the mothers were unmarried. It has always seemed to me that embedded in the “If only black men would marry the women they have babies with…” rhetoric was a more insidious suggestion: that there is something fundamental, and intrinsic about black men that is flawed, that black fathers are pathologically prone to desertion of their offspring and therefore largely responsible for black community “dysfunction.” There is an astounding amount of mythology loaded into this stereotype, one that echoes a history of efforts to rob black masculinity of honor and fidelity.” Continue Reading Charles M. Put aside for a moment that the myth of the absent black father has been debunked time and again. We won’t discuss how black fathers have comparable—and in some cases higher—levels of involvement with their children as do white and Latino fathers. Oh, yes. Missing black fathers. Those magical black fathers whose return to the home has the ability to cure poverty, violence, drug abuse and anti-police mentalities. A grand patriarch to save us all. It doesn’t matter that our romanticization of marriage and the two-parent (cisgender man and cisgender woman only, of course) home can be dangerous. It matters even less that the reason raising children in two-parent homes is more advantageous is because our public policies favor marriage and offer little support for single-parent or other “non-traditional” family structures. And the fact that these black men so many people want to step up and be fathers face discrimination everywhere from the job market to the legal system isn’t even up for discussion. No, it doesn’t matter. Just get young black men some fathers and everything will be fixed.” Continue Reading Mychal Denzel Smith’s article: http://bit.ly/1RmyWCR “In fact, in its coverage of the study, the Los Angeles Times noted that the results “defy stereotypes about black fatherhood” because the CDC found that black dads are more involved with their kids on a daily basis than dads from other racial groups. Despite the concrete evidence to dispel the prevailing assumptions about black dads, the conversation is still dominated by headlines like ‘What’s the Problem with Black Fathers?’ and ‘Who’s Your Daddy: The Epidemic Of Absent Black Fathers.’” Continue Reading Think Progress’ Article: http://bit.ly/1GfQcEI -- source link
