The Auto-Ordnance Thompson Model 1923,By the early 1920’s the Thompson Submachine Gun was becoming popular among military, law enforcement, and gangsters. The military especially took interest, seeing the potential of a light fully automatic firearm. However, the military also wanted something that was lighter than the Browning Automatic Rifle but still powerful with a range up to 600 yards. In essence they wanted a fully automatic light rifle. In 1923 Auto Ordnance Thompson Model 1923 was an attempt to fill this gap. Modeled after the Thompson Model 1921, the Model 1923 fired the much heavier and more powerful .45 Remington-Thompson, a cartridge that was bigger and more powerful than the .45ACP used in other models. Incredibly, the new cartridge used a heavy 250 grain bullet that was propelled with a muzzle velocity of 1,450 feet per second. Called the military model, it also featured a detachable stock, with some having a bayonet mount and others with a folding bipod.Powerful, accurate, and able to achieve ranges up to 650 yards. It seemed that Model 1923 met all of the Army’s specifics. However it was never adopted as the Army was more interested in a full power semi automatic rifle instead. Very few were produced. -- source link
